Constipation

THE EFFECT ON YOUR BODY

Patrick Holford offers information that covers many other interesting topics, including ways to improve your digestion. In his book Improve your Digestion, Patrick Holford says the following about constipation: “For some people long-term constipation can result in physical blockages and distensions of the bowel. This is a major cause of diverticulosis and can lead to inflammatory bowel problems. Constipation slows down the time food spends in the digestive tract, which allows more opportunity for putrefaction and exposure to toxic material. This is a major contributor to colo-rectal cancer and it is therefore no surprise that there is a link between constipation and colo-rectal cancer.”

Constipation most commonly occurs when waste moves too slowly through the digestive tract, causing it to become hard and dry. When there is insufficient fluid and/or fibre-rich food (the indigestible part of vegetables, fruit and cereal) in your diet, or if your colon's muscle contractions are slow, or diet or there is aa disruption in your regular diet or routine, the stool hardens and dries which causes it to pass through the colon too slowly. This is often the root cause of constipation.

What is considered ‘normal’ frequency for bowel movements differs widely. In general, it could be said that you’re constipated if you have fewer than three bowel movements a week, and your stools are dry and hard. Exercising more regularly, drinking more fluids (2litres /day) and eating a high-fibre diet, can go a long way toward alleviating constipation. Colonics will help re-train the bowel and encourage it to work without the use of laxatives.

CONSTIPATION AND LAXATIVES

Laxatives can be addictive and, if taken regularly, generally lose their effectiveness.

CONSTIPATION SLOWS DOWN LIVER FUNCTION

Constipation or a sluggish digestion causes waste build up in the colon which slows down the healthy functioning of the liver. This causes toxins to build up in other organs, including the brain, heart, liver and kidneys as the toxins are circulated throughout the body. If the liver is not functioning properly, toxins are stored which give a feeling of sluggishness, brain fog, lethargy, confusion, headaches, bad skin etc. The 10-day detox program mentioned on my site is recommended twice or three times a year to help general detoxification with specific emphasis on the liver. Colonics will also be of immense help.

WATER AND EXERCISE ARE CRITICAL

Increasing fluid intake, eating healthy fibre daily, getting regular physical exercise and Colon Hydrotherapy will all go a long way to help alleviate or combat constipation.

HEALTHY BACTERIA / DIGESTIVE ENZYMES AND PROBIOTICS

In order to properly digest and eliminate food, we need a balanced inner ecosystem made up of healthy gut bacteria. Food that is not properly broken down in the stomach or small intestine ferments and promotes an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. Digestive enzymes and probiotics may aid digestion, remove toxins and alleviate constipation. Holistic Hydro stocks an excellent gluten and lactose free range at discounted prices!

If you suffer from constipation, book an appointment for a Colonic instead of taking laxatives.
