What Your Poop is Trying to Tell You: Here's How to Make Your Number 2 Priority Number 1!

Everybody poops – but that does not mean that all poop is created equal. The colour and texture of a person's stool can provide direct insight into their gut health (or lack thereof). Here is what to look out for.

  • Hard, ‘deer droppings': This type of pellet-like poop is commonly linked to constipation and can be caused by not drinking enough water, stress, thyroid problems, or magnesium deficiency.

  • Solid with cracks: This poop is a bit harder than it should be, but it is still considered to be a ‘healthy' bowel movement. Make improvements by drinking more liquids throughout the day.

  • Soft, yet solid and sausage-like: There you have it – the gold standard of bowel movements. If poop could be perfect, this is what it would look like.

  • Separate, soft-ish blobs: This is a good indication that your gut is lacking fibre. The average amount that you should be consuming daily is 25 grams – more if you are a taller or larger than average individual.

  • Loose and mushy: Many people who suffer from ‘leaky gut’ will display this type of number 2. It is often a sign that the gut is irritated or inflamed. If it is not the norm for you, it likely means that you have eaten something suspect and your gut is suffering the consequences.

  • Liquid: When you have diarrhoea, you can be sure that your intestines are severely inflamed. You may have a viral or bacterial infection, or your gut may simply be unbalanced and require a decent cleansing. If this lasts indefinitely, you could be suffering from more complex issues, which might warrant a visit to the doctor and a colonic, stat!

Remember if you are not happy with the results whenever nature calls, you may be wondering how to make your number 2 a number 1 priority. Eat a balanced colourful diet, hydrate, get plenty of sleep and exercise, avoid too much alcohol, gluten, sugar and dairy, and consider regular colon hydrotherapy.
